Non-EU nationals need a work visa to work in the UK.
Work permits are available through a government scheme known as “Seasonal
Agricultural Workers Scheme” SAWS.
G’s recruit direct from the following universities.
Bulgaria & Romania
On 24th October 2006, it was announced that Romania and Bulgaria were
to accede to the European Union (EU) on 1st January 2007. Alongside
this it was announced that restrictions would apply to nationals from
these two counties who wish to work in the UK.
Criteria
Be a national of Romania and Bulgaria
- Are
18 years of age or more
- Need
to have a work card issued by an approved SAWS operator.
- Maximum
stay of six months on SAWS
- Applicants
may participate in the scheme on more than one occasion provided there
is a break of three months.
- Open
to everybody (not just students)
- Nationals
from Romania and Bulgaria are subject to the same tax and national
insurance rules as all other employees
- Farmers
and growers will supply accommodation at or near the place of work.

Recruitment from non-EEA Countries.
Students working under the SAWS scheme must be aware of the following
immigration rules:
- Be aged
18 years of age or more at the time of starting work on the scheme
- Be
a student on a full-time course of study in your home country
- Live
outside the European Economic Area
- Remain
outside the UK throughout the entire application process
- Individuals
may participate in the scheme on more than one occasion provided they
continue to be a student in full-time education, undertake a minimum
break of three months between periods of participation, and they abide
by the rules concerning their immigration status
- Dependants
are not permitted to accompany SAWS participants unless they qualify
for entry in their own right.
The definition of a full-time student under SAWS:
- The
course of study is at a publicly funded institution of further or
higher education or a bona fide private education institutions, which
maintains satisfactory records of enrolment and attendance.
- The
person is aged 18 or over
- The
period of participation on the SAWS is to take place after the official
start date, and before the official end date, of the course of study,
as defined by the educational institution. Individuals in between
courses of study, for example, following completion of study for ‘A’
levels or their equivalent, and the start of a university course,
are not eligible. However, time taken by students in the form of.
For example, extended holiday periods, are permitted, provided participation
is within the official period of the course of study and agreement
is gained from the educational institution.
- The
course is a full-time degree course or a full-time course at a higher
education institution, requiring a minimum of 15 hours organised daytime
study per week.

are required to collect, record and maintain information. All information
has to be made available to the Home Office on request and within reason.
The information that is provided to the Home Office is liable to be
disclosed to other government departments – subject to the requirements
